Next month, our school PTAs are hosting an expert presentation and panel discussion on promoting a growth mindset in our children. We have the good fortune of having Eduardo Briceño, an expert on growth mindset, joining us that evening. We invite you to take a look at Mr. Briceño's Ted Talk from a couple of years ago. Instilling a growth mindset in our students is one of the goals of our school district's strategic plan, and it is an important component of good parenting and good schooling. Please mark February 8, 7-8:30pm, at Ralston Middle School on your calendar.

Extracurricular Math Challenge!
We want to share an exciting, free opportunity for students to strengthen their skills in math in a fun online environment. LearnStorm is an extracurricular math challenge designed by the Khan Academy, the famous online learning non-profit. The goal of LearnStorm is to promote math learning and a growth mindset. Specifically, students can earn points and recognition for math mastery as well as for "hustle," which reflects students' persistence, effort, and growth. Students can compare their performance to students from other schools and cities, and there will be a celebratory, in-person event on the Google campus later this spring for selected students.
This is high-quality math content. The folks at Khan have vetted their math tasks with the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (the organization that authored our new state tests) and Illustrative Mathematics (the organization that had an active role in writing the Common Core Standards in math). Also, Khan has high standards for privacy, and there are no advertisements--the event is strictly not for profit. Students only need an email address (or a parent's email address) to register. More information regarding registration and rules for the challenge can be found here. The contest starts on January 29. We encourage you to consider it!
