California Voting Rights Act -
Transition to By-District Trustee Elections

Background & Final Decision

Board members in the Belmont-Redwood Shores School District are currently elected in “at-large” elections, where all board members are elected by voters throughout the entire school district. On April 20, 2023, the Board adopted Resolution #19, in response to the California Voting Rights Act (CVRA). BRSSD intends to transition from at-large to by-trustee area Board elections, where each Board member must reside within the designated trustee area boundary, and is elected only by the voters in that trustee area.  In By-Trustee Area Elections, voters only vote for one seat on the school board.

At the November 16, 2023 Board Meeting, after the overview presentation by Redistricing Partners, conducting the Public Hearing, and subsequent Board discussion, it was motioned that the Board of Trustees approves Map E.1 along with corresponding election sequencing and Resolution #2023/24-5E.1. This motion passed.
